Description
Beautiful historical Kyung Yok Ch'ong (Government Tithe Office) Song Pyong Tong Bao Cast Bronze 5MUN, Series 9, ND (1883). The coin is identified as KM# 150. The coin is about 31 mm across, and weighs about 7.3 g.
In the Obverse, four Chinese characters Song Pyong Tong Bo (Korean reading), inside and outside rim. In the Reverse, Tang O ("Value 5") right and left, "9" below the hole (for the series number), inside and outside rims.
A bit of history. Song Pyong Tong Bao (Always even universal currency) coins were issued between 1678 to 1880's. The mint name (usually abbreviated) was placed on the reverse, along with the denomination and the issue number (usually one to ten). Numerous reverse varieties bearing different mint marks and symbols are known.
