** Kunzite is a pink to lilac colored gemstone, a variety of Spodumene with the color coming from minor to trace amounts of manganese. The appeal of this gemstone lies in its clarity and its fine delicate pink nuances which often display a hint of violet. These are delicate, tender hues, feminine and seductive.
Kunzite is still a very young gemstone. It was first discovered in California in 1902, and was named after George Frederick Kunz, Tiffany & Co's chief jeweler at the time, and a noted mineralogist. It has also been found in Brazil, Canada, Mexico, Sweden, Western Australia, Mozambique, Afghanistan and Pakistan. It wasn't until the 1990's that this gemstone became a more mainstream gemstone, having been used only as a collector gemstone prior to that time.
One notable example of Kunzite used in jewelry is in the Russian Palmette tiara and necklace worn by the Duchess of Gloucester.
Most Kunzites in its natural form, however, have a fairly light color. It is commonly heat treated to intensify its color and remove brownish tones. Strongly colored Kunzite is rare and thus correspondingly valuable. However, the color can fade in direct sunlight. For that reason, jewelry with Kunzite should never be worn while sunbathing or on the beach. Although the color-fading effect is very slow, most people still prefer to wear Kunzite jewelry in the evening to avoid sunlight exposure. Kunzite is regarded as an evening stone for this reason.
